Playing a pivotal role in the American Civil War, the city of Vicksburg is home to a host of attractions and historical sites including Vicksburg National Military Park, the Old Courthouse, U.S.S. Cairo Museum, The Old Depot Museum and much more.
Vicksburg National Military Park was the site of a violent 47 day battle, “the Siege of Vicksburg”. The park is only a short drive from the hotel and it provides a fascinating insight into the strategic importance of Vicksburg and the surrounding areas, as well as the battle itself which ended with the surrender of the Confederate Army on the 4th July 1863. The Park contains a museum, several forts, battlefield trenches and the U.S.S. Cairo Museum.
You’ll be able to walk through part of the USS Cairo, the only remaining example of a City Class Ironclad. Inside the museum you’ll find a collection of fascinating artefacts and a short film on the recovery and restoration of this amazing ship.
Standing prominently on a hill, the Old Courthouse was completed by slaves in 1860 and restored as a museum in 1947. The museum is now home to historical photographs and artefacts including Confederate flags and a tie worn by Jefferson Davis.
Other popular attractions nearby include the Old Depot Museum, the McRaven Tour Home, the Lower Mississippi River Museum and the Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum, a restored building where Coca-Cola was first bottled in 1894.
