About Motorhome Tour: Portland to San Francisco

Description

Portland

The first stop on this journey is a stay at The Porter Portland, Curio Collection by Hilton which is a sleek, contemporary urban retreat perched above Portland’s vibrant Fountain District – just a short stroll from the waterfront, arts venues, and the city’s best dining and culture. From the moment you arrive, you’re immersed in a design-forward atmosphere that reflects the creative, free-spirited energy of Portland.

The guest rooms and suites blend modern comfort with thoughtful touches: expect flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, coffee and tea facilities with local blends, plush bathrobes and slippers, and in many rooms – expansive floor-to-ceiling windows offering views across the city, the nearby river, or the Cascade Mountains. For extra space and flexibility, the hotel’s suites provide separate living areas and wet bars – ideal whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or with family.

When it’s time to relax or recharge, The Porter delivers: unwind in the heated indoor pool, enjoy the sauna or steam room, or sweat it out in the 24-hour fitness centre. For dining, the hotel offers multiple on-site options: enjoy Italian-inspired fare at the signature restaurant, grab a quick gourmet pizza or fresh take-away dishes, or head up to the rooftop bar/lounge for crafted cocktails, sunset views, and a cozy, social vibe.

Thanks to its premium, central downtown location, The Porter makes it easy to explore Portland on foot or by public transport. Whether you’re in town for culture, nightlife, or a city break, the hotel offers that bit of extra comfort — stylish rooms, great amenities, and easy access to everything the city has to offer.

Motorhome Road Trip

It’s time to collect your motorhome so you can begin your adventure to California. Standard motorhomes feature modern facilities, including a practical kitchenette with microwave, gas cooker, refrigerator and freezer, and a fully-equipped private bathroom with a shower and fresh water toilet. For added comfort, there’s also air conditioning and the plush beds will allow your motorhome to become your new home-from-home as you travel towards the golden state itself.

Oxbow Regional Park (Near Portland)

Your motorhome adventure begins as you leave Portland behind and travel along the Columbia River Highway toward Oxbow Regional Park, your first stop. This journey offers spectacular views of Oregon’s natural beauty, with opportunities to see iconic waterfalls such as Multnomah Falls, which plunges 620 feet into a lush canyon. Before arriving, you may want to stop in Hood River Waterfront Park, a relaxing spot on the Columbia River with great dining options and lovely evening views. Once at Oxbow, unwind among old-growth forests and peaceful river scenery as you settle into the rhythm of motorhome life.

Beverly Beach State Park

Next, make your way west to the Oregon Coast, travelling toward Beverly Beach State Park, located just north of Newport. Along the way, you can detour to Astoria, known as the “Little San Francisco of the Pacific Northwest,” with its Victorian homes and sweeping views from the historic Astoria Column. As you continue down Highway 101, stop at charming coastal towns such as Depoe Bay, home to the world’s smallest harbour and excellent whale-watching. Beverly Beach itself offers wide stretches of sandy shoreline perfect for long walks, kite flying, and dramatic sunset watching.

From the coast, head inland toward Tumalo State Park, located just outside the vibrant town of Bend. This scenic area is known for its river canyons, pine forests, and easy access to outdoor adventure. Nearby, you can visit the impressive Sea Lion Caves before turning inland toward the mountains. Once you reach Bend, consider taking the chairlift up Mount Bachelor for panoramic views of the Cascade Range or explore Bend’s lively shops, cafés, breweries, and galleries. Tumalo is a peaceful place to unwind by the Deschutes River after a day of exploring.

Your journey continues south to the unforgettable blue depths of Crater Lake National Park. Formed in a collapsed volcano, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and one of the most visually striking natural wonders in North America. Drive the scenic Rim Road (seasonal), stop at dramatic viewpoints, or take one of the many hiking trails offering views of Wizard Island and the surrounding peaks. The journey to Crater Lake brings you through forests, volcanic landscapes, and wide-open vistas — a true highlight of the American West.

From Crater Lake, travel southeast toward River Park Resort, a welcoming base surrounded by quiet countryside, wineries, and rivers. This area offers charming small towns, local tasting rooms, and antique shops. If you enjoy quirky attractions, you might take a short detour to the Oregon Vortex, known for its optical illusions and mysterious energy fields. The region’s mild climate and scenic byways make it a lovely place to slow down, enjoy nature, and relax between major sightseeing stops.

Heading further south, you’ll cross into California to reach the towering ancient forests of Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park. This area is home to some of the tallest trees on Earth, with peaceful hiking trails weaving through lush redwood groves. On the way, consider visiting Oregon Caves National Monument, known for its marble cave system. Once in the redwoods, you’ll find serene walking paths, river access, and countless opportunities for wildlife spotting and photography. The nearby town of Crescent City also features the oldest working lighthouse on the Pacific Coast.

Continue south to the historic seaport town of Eureka, the heart of Humboldt County. This region is famous for the Avenue of the Giants, a 31-mile drive through some of the most awe-inspiring redwood forests in the world — an unforgettable experience that passes right through small redwood communities and dramatic natural scenery. In Eureka, enjoy Victorian architecture, coastal views, and local seafood. You might also take a Humboldt Bay boat tour or visit shops and museums before moving further toward wine country.

From the redwoods, the scenery shifts to rolling hills and vineyards as you enter Sonoma County, one of California’s most celebrated wine regions. Visit picturesque wineries, enjoy tastings, and explore small towns filled with farm-to-table restaurants, art galleries, and boutique shops. Nature lovers can wander the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, while coastal adventurers can visit Bodega Bay for ocean views and fresh seafood. Along Highway 1, the Point Arena Lighthouse adds a dramatic stop with sweeping cliffside vistas.

The final place you’ll stay is Marin RV park, just 10 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge. Use the extensive public transport links and explore the beating heart of San Francisco. Finally, return your motorhome to the Cruise America depot just 40 miles from the final RV park.

San Francisco

San Francisco has an immense range of attractions including the infamous Alcatraz cruise, Golden Gate Park, Fisherman’s Wharf, 200 parks and beaches, world-class shopping and evening entertainment. One of the best ways to see the sights is to book a double-decker bus tour of the city, mission accomplished. All packed into less than 47 square miles, San Francisco is exciting, diverse and cosmopolitan.

Hotel RIU Plaza Fisherman’s Wharf, the hotel’s wonderful setting in the heart of the lively Fisherman’s Wharf district puts you within easy reach of lots of San Francisco’s world famous attractions. Get ready to explore Pier 39, a popular tourist destination built on a stunning pier, with a vast range of dining options and shops with spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island and stunning San Franciscan skyline. You can even spot Californian sea lions from the pier, who love to frequent San Francisco Bay – and it’s easy to see why they love calling this lively city their home. Why stop with just views of the Golden Gate Bridge when you could cycle on it? Local bike rental companies nearby will help you to arrange a bike hire to complete an unforgettable journey over the 1.7 mile long bridge, with sweeping views of San Francisco Bay and the city’s gleaming skyline.
