Begin your Route 66 Motorhome Adventure

Next, it’s time to collect your motorhome to begin your America West adventure. Standard motorhomes feature modern facilities, including a practical kitchenette with microwave, gas cooker and refrigerator and freezer, and a fully-equipped private bathroom with a shower and fresh water toilet. For added comfort, there’s also air conditioning and the plush beds will allow your motorhome to become your new home-from-home as you tour along the iconic Route 66 and Highway 1.

Springfield

First, head Midwest on Route 66, arriving in Springfield, Illinois, for your first stop on your Route 66 motorhome holiday. Enjoy the museums, shops and famous American diners along the side of this impressive highway. Once you arrive in Springfield, visit Abraham Lincoln’s tomb and the historic site at Salem to see the 1830s village, where Lincoln spent his earlier years, reconstructed. Next stop is the banks of the Mississippi River and St Louis. Visit America’s tallest monument, The Gateway Arch, which pays homage to Thomas Jefferson and St Louis’ role in the expansion of the United States. Go to the top of The Gateway Arch before heading onwards to Lone Elk Park to view bison, wild turkeys, elk and deer and then stopping off at Route 66 State Park and resting overnight at Springfield, Missouri.

Tulsa

Next, you’ll drive through America’s heartlands towards Tulsa. Ensure you stop at Joplin, the town Bonnie and Clyde used to use as a hide out. Tulsa is a cultural hub with extensive collections of European art and the fantastic Brady Arts District, where you can catch live music- with everything from jazz to rock, there’s something for all genres. Additionally, this district is also home to popular bars and restaurants.

Oklahoma City

On this stretch you’ll see some of the oldest motels and diners along the ‘Mother Road’. Oklahoma City is rich in American history and culture, as well as lively nightlife and eateries at Bricktown, and it’s also home to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, where you can learn all about western America’s past.

Elk City

The next stop on your route 66 RV holiday is Elk City, but before you arrive there, make sure you keep your eyes peeled for hidden gems alongside the highway, including two Route 66 museums in Clinton and Elk City itself. In Elk City, visit the Old Town Museum with exhibits from bygone eras including the city’s pioneer and cowboy days, and go for a calming walk around Ackley Park.

Amarillo

After Elk City, it’s off to Amarillo in Texas. Visit Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the second largest in America, where you can experience the canyon on horseback, as cowboys once would have done. In Amarillo, visit the historic Route 66 district with its boutiques and dining, or go to the Cadillac Ranch, a famous sculpture with Cadillacs appearing to nosedive into the sand.

Tucumcari

Snap some pictures with the Route 66 neon signs and hike at the nearby Conchas Lake State Parks. Next, it’s time to go to Albuquerque, the capital of New Mexico. Stop off and visit Santa Fe’s famous art galleries and check out art museums including the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. On your travels, you’ll also see traces of the American Indians’ heritage, as their traditions and cultures are still present today.

Williams

Williams KOA, your campsite for the next two nights, right near the Grand Canyon. As this is a long section of the journey, break it up and stop at Gallup, the centre of Native American Lands in the past. Once you arrive at the campsite, choose whether you are going to drive to the Grand Canyon, go on KOA’s van tours or go by train. Alternatively, why not book to go in a helicopter or raft to the Grand Canyon for a more adventurous experience. The campsite also has fun activities such as bike rentals, horse riding and live Western music.

Kingman

Next, head to Kingman KOA for the next night of your Route 66 Campervan Holidays. Unwind by the pool and enjoy being surrounded by the peaceful Hualapai Mountains. Ensure that before you leave Kingman you’ve visited the Route 66 Museum, helping you to understand more about the journey you’re on.

Las Vegas

The next two nights will be spent in Las Vegas, at a campsite right on the Strip itself, so you can watch the dazzling Las Vegas lights from the comfort of your motorhome. Watch a show such as Cirque du Soleil or try your luck at one of the many casinos and enjoy strolling up and down the Strip in the daytime

Hoover Dam

Next travel into California, but don’t forget before then you’ll go past the famous Hoover Dam between Arizona and Nevada. Make sure you stop and admire this engineering feat before continuing on, stopping at Mojave National preserve with its stunning Joshua tree forests, deserts and wildflower fields.

Los Angeles

Next stop is Los Angeles for two nights. With so much to see and do, you’ll be spoilt for choice! Shop until you drop, go on a Beverly Hills Tour, visit Disneyland or Universal and Knott’s Berry Farm. No visit to LA would be complete without a trip to Hollywood Boulevard to see the stars, too!

Santa Margarita

Once you’ve left Los Angeles behind, go north towards your next stop at Santa Margarita KOA. Stop at Santa Barbara for beautiful beaches and restaurants to break up your journey. The next stop is Santa Cruz, enjoying the ocean views from coastal towns such as Monterey and Carmel along the way. Stop off at some of these towns to enjoy the laid-back Californian way of life.

San Francisco

Lastly, your journey will be spent in San Francisco, meaning you get to cross the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to get to the campsite. In San Francisco, cycle over the Golden Gate Bridge, go on a visit to Alcatraz and enjoy the restaurants and shops in Union Square or see the sea lions at Pier 39.

It’s time to return your motorhome to the Newark Cruise America depot. Why not extend your stay to visit Yosemite National Park’s picturesque landscapes? It is well worth it- with dramatic rock faces and waterfalls, which are perfect for budding photographers. Go on a walking tour or hike around the national park and you’ll get to really appreciate its natural charm.

This fabulous route 66 motorhome offer allows you to experience two of America’s most famous roads. Touring from state to state from the windy city to the golden state, you’ll see very different sides to America- from its heritage, to its culture and the bright lights of lively cities such as Los Angeles and Las Vegas. This is an unforgettable opportunity allowing you to go on the road trip of a lifetime!
