Next, it’s time to collect your motorhome from the Cruise Canada Halifax depot. Firstly, it’s a short drive to Lunenburg. Gaze at the spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean and pass the quaint coastal villages in Peggy’s Cove and Chester Bay before arriving in the UNESCO world heritage site of Lunenburg town. Beyond the vibrant buildings in the old town’s waterfront, discover guided tours recounting historic tales of haunting spirits and visit the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic on the waterfront. Next, it’s off to Kejimkujik National Park, where you can explore the natural beauty of Nova Scotia away from the busy cities. For action-packed adventures, canoe or kayak on the traditional waterways or go on a hiking or cycling trail through picture-perfect forests.
Continue your journey to Digby, where you will be spending the next couple of days. Head to Digby Neck or Brier Island for some of the most amazing whale watching experiences in North America. Local experts will tell you all about the local wildlife, as well as stories and facts about the whales themselves. The Fisherman’s Wharf, Digby is the ideal spot for meals with ocean views and the hiking trails along Digby’s coast provide calming backdrops for perfect photo opportunities. For days 5 and 6, you will be based in Fundy National Park, which is a short Bay Ferry ride and drive away. The low tides in the Bay of Fundy allow visitors to see new depths of seashore life and the scenic coastal roads’ observation decks offer the chance of seeing some more whales. Explore this natural, peaceful setting by wandering through the forest or heading to the beach.
For the next two days your base is in Kouchibouguac National Park. On the way, see the dramatic rock formations at Hopewell Rocks, The Ocean Tidal Exploration Site, where the world’s highest tides are formed. Once you reach the national park, enjoy the bogs, tidal rivers, secluded lagoons and salt marshes from the 60km of cycling paths by renting some bikes or head for a walk through the calming fields and forests. Days 9 and 10 will be based in Charlotte Town on Prince Edward Island. Cross the Confederation Bridge to the home of Anne of Green Gables and see the enchanting setting of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novel for yourself. Follow a tourist coastal drive and soak in the magical scenery passing some of the island’s 50 lighthouses. In Cavendish, be sure to visit the Green Gables Heritage Place, perfect for finding out more about the island and a superb spot for avid readers.
The next day, you’ll arrive by ferry into Pictou, where you’ll begin your drive to Cape Breton Island, before ending up at Lake Ainslie. Pay a visit to the Hector Heritage Centre and can climb aboard a replica of the Ship Hector that brought the very first Scottish settlers into Nova Scotia. Continue your journey towards the coastal Inverness town, famed for its Mermaids’ Tears (coloured sea glass which washes up on the sandy beaches). Spend the next couple of days based in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, where you can drive along the famous Cabot Trail, with picturesque views of the breath-taking landscapes and stopping places.
It’s a long but magnificent drive back to the Cruise Canada depot in Halifax. Stop off at Martinique Beach to enjoy the glorious sandy beaches before stopping for your final night with your motorhome at the KOA campsite, where the depot is situated. Take the morning of the final day to relax and get your belongings together before returning your motorhome.
