Newport offers a peaceful Oregon beach experience with a historic bay front near calming state parks, Newport Aquarium and Nye Beach, which features ocean views, shopping, dining and local art galleries. Natural attractions nearby include Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site with a restored lighthouse, hiking trails, pristine beach and picnic spaces. Continue south to the towns of Yachats, Florence, Coos Bay and Bandon, all perfect places to stop and explore to break up the journey. Stay overnight at the Best Western Inn at Face Rock, featuring everything needed for a restful stay including an indoor heated pool and hot tub, 24-hour fitness centre, complimentary hot buffet breakfast and free parking. In-room amenities include modern décor, a refrigerator, microwave, hairdryer, TV, Wi-Fi access and coffee and tea maker.

The next day is the longest day in the car but it allows you to tick two more wonders off your list as you finish your coastal travels and visit Crater Lake. Check out Bandon’s Historic Old Town before setting off on your journey. There are plenty of places to explore to stretch your legs including Port Orford Heads State Park’s range of hiking trails and Gold Beach’s South Beach and Buena Vista state parks. Crater Lake’s 33-mile drive around the shoreline allows you to see its crystal waters and cinder cone centre, Wizard Island, without moving a muscle. Stop to take some snaps before arriving in Bend. You’ll be spending the next couple of nights at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Bend. Situated just steps from Bend’s eateries, boutiques, entertainment and more, you’ll be in the heart of the action whilst being able to enjoy relaxing amenities such as the indoor pool, fitness centre and convenient on-site restaurant. Guestrooms feature a mini refrigerator, 40” HDTV, microwave, ironing facilities, hairdryer, plush bed and seating area.

Wake up to a beautiful sunrise in Bend, where you’ll have the day to explore its charm. Discover the Old Ironworks District, packed with artists and creators in an original 1912 railroad building. If you’re feeling adventurous, head on a hike or bike ride along the Deschutes River Trail, following the course of the river and passing straight through the heart of Bend town. If you love beer, check out the Bend Ale Trail, with 14 local craft breweries to explore. Finish the day in Bend’s walkable centre with drinks, dinner and perhaps a show or some shopping before a peaceful night’s sleep.

Get back on the road and check off another two wonders. Smith Rock boasts rugged spires that have attracted rock climbers since the 1980s. Admire the climbers or go for a hike on one of the hiking trails to explore the desert. Then continue to the Painted Hills’ uniquely vibrant landscape. Finish the day in John Day, where your home for the evening will be the Best Western John Day Inn, with a heated indoor pool, free parking, free Wi-Fi, complimentary full breakfast, hot tub and 24-hour fitness facility. Rooms include comfortable beds, refrigerator, coffee and tea maker, air conditioning, TV, microwave, hairdryer and more. Head out of John Day on Highway 7 towards Baker City, travelling along the Journey through Time Scenic Byway and passing wagon ruts on the Oregon Trail.

The Geiser Grand Hotel in Baker City is a historic landmark with elegant features including a stunning stained glass ceiling and crystal chandeliers in every room. A café bar and restaurant in the hotel are convenient dining options and the fitness centre is the perfect place to stretch after a day travelling. Guestrooms feature classic styling with free Wi-Fi access, TVs, robes, hair dryer and ironing facilities. The next day, head out to see your fifth wonder as you finish the day by the Wallowa Mountains, lovingly named ‘Little Switzerland’. Relax at the Best Western Plus Rama Inn & Suites, your home for the next two nights, and make use of its practical facilities including complimentary full breakfasts, an indoor pool, hot tub and free parking as well as in-room amenities such as a TV with premium channels including HBO and CNN, Wi-Fi access, coffee and tea maker, refrigerator, microwave and a hairdryer.

Take the next day to explore the idyllic Wallowa Mountains area, visiting the Eagle Cap Wilderness and Hells Canyon. Take some pictures of the breath-taking scenery before continuing to your sixth wonder, the Columbia River Gorge, which spans from the Deschutes River to the western Sandy River. Your home for the next couple of nights is the Best Western Plus Hood River Inn. The only award-winning hotel on the picturesque Columbia River shoreline, this superb hotel offers a range of amenities for a comfortable stay including free parking, a heated outdoor hot tub, sauna, modern fitness centre and on-site riverside dining. Check the final wonder off your list: the magnificent Mount Hood rising a stunning 11,250 feet above sea level. Explore local hiking routes including the Tamanawas Falls Trail for a 3.6 mile trail to a forest and waterfall. Visit the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum to step back in time or try some more local wines, ciders and beers head to the vast array of breweries and wineries including The Gorge White House which specialises in ciders, regional wines and craft beers with unparalleled mountain views with historic surroundings on a working farm. On your way back to Portland, head up Highway 35 and stop at Panorama Point for one last look at the glorious Mount Hood.
