Shaker Village, Kentucky

Located just a half-hour away from Lexington, the charming town of Harrodsburg is home to the largest restored Shaker community in the United States. This village, named Pleasant Hill, has a storied history dating back to 1805. A group of skilled and hardworking Shakers came to rural Kentucky seeking to establish a new settlement.

Pleasant Hill quickly rose to prominence in its prime, with the population swelling to nearly 500 residents. It also acquired over 4,000 acres of fertile farmland. However, as the years passed and social attitudes shifted with the rise of the Industrial Revolution, the fortunes of Pleasant Hill waned, and the once-thriving community experienced a gradual decline.

Devastatingly, by 1923, the last remaining Shaker at Pleasant Hill passed away, and the proud buildings, possessions, and land passed into private hands. To this day, this historic site still stands as a tribute to the ingenuity and perseverance of early settlers who sought to forge a new way of life in their adopted homeland.
